Target rate history
Commonly known as the Fed Funds Rate, the Federal Funds Rate is a short-term rate objective or “Target Rate” of the Federal Reserve Board. Also known as the Intended Federal Funds Rate, it can be expressed as a specific rate or as a range of rates. The “Actual Rate” is known as the Effective Federal Funds Rate, The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meets eight times a year to determine the federal funds target rate. The current federal funds rate as of March 10, 2020 is 1.09%. The Federal Reserve lowered the target range for its federal funds rate by 50bps to 1-1.25 percent during an emergency move on March 3rd, saying the coronavirus poses evolving risks to economic activity. From the end of 2008 through October 2014, the Federal Reserve greatly expanded its holding of longer-term securities through open market purchases with the goal of putting downward pressure on longer-term interest rates and thus supporting economic activity and job creation by making financial conditions more accommodative. As of 30 October 2019 the target range for the Federal Funds Rate is 1.50–1.75%. This reduction represented the third of the current sequence of rate decreases: the first occurred in July 2019. The last full cycle of rate increases occurred between June 2004 and June 2006 as rates steadily rose from 1.00% to 5.25%.
